On Hilton Head Island, there are two distinct ways of life. Some choose the island as their year-round residence, while others see it as the perfect premier vacation destination. Which lifestyle speaks to you?
For some, the answer is simple. For others, it helps to understand what each option offers before deciding. Hilton Head welcomes approximately 2.5 million visitors a year, and its communities can be grouped into two main categories: resort communities and residential communities.
Resort Communities
Resort communities are vibrant and active, with homes and villas that often serve as vacation rentals throughout the year. Located primarily on the south end of the island, these neighborhoods see more traffic and a steady flow of visitors. Popular resort communities include Sea Pines, Palmetto Dunes, Shipyard, Folly Field, and Forest Beach.
Residential Communities
Residential communities, on the other hand, are designed for privacy and year-round living. They offer private amenities, private beaches, and a quieter lifestyle with neighbors who live here full time. Many are located on the north end of the island, where life moves at a slower pace. Wexford, Indigo Run, Port Royal, Windmill Harbour, and Hilton Head Plantation are among the most sought-after residential neighborhoods.
