Sea Turtle Season on Hilton Head Island

Happy May Monday! Sunshine and perfect weather are ahead. May is one of the most beautiful months of the year on Hilton Head Island, with ideal temperatures, light rainfall, and the ocean finally warm enough for a refreshing swim. It is the perfect time to enjoy long beach days and everything the Lowcountry lifestyle has to offer.

Sea Turtle Nesting Season

Beginning in May and lasting through October, sea turtles make their way to Hilton Head’s beaches to nest. Along the shoreline, you will see areas carefully marked with tape and signs to protect the eggs. It is a special season on the island, as these remarkable creatures return year after year.

How to Help Protect Sea Turtles

Visitors and residents play an important role in keeping sea turtles safe. Remember to turn off beachfront lights after 10 PM, avoid using flashlights on the beach, and always fill in any holes and knock down sandcastles before you leave. Pick up litter when you see it, leave nests undisturbed, and share the importance of these small steps with others. Together, these efforts help ensure that Hilton Head remains a safe nesting place for generations to come.

Hilton Head Island is fortunate to be part of this natural cycle, and protecting our sea turtles is just one more reason to appreciate the beauty and responsibility that comes with living in the Lowcountry.
